Calorie Labelling Legislation

The new calorie labelling legislation The Calorie Labelling (Out of Home) Regulations 2021 came into effect across England on 6 April 2022. This legislation is not currently in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland but consultations are ongoing, and equivalent legislation is likely.

The new calorie labelling legislation:

  • Restaurants, fast food outlets, cafes, pubs and supermarkets

  • Home delivery services and third-party apps selling food that is in scope

  • Cafes and takeaways within larger shops and venues, such as supermarkets, department stores, delicatessen’s, bakeries and sweet shops

  • Contract Catering

  • Domestic transport businesses such as trains, planes and coaches

The businesses currently in scope for the legislation include:

Smarter Waste Management
  • Display energy content of food per portion in kilocalories (KCal)

  • Define portion size unless clearly a single portion, and;

  • Display the statement ‘Adults need around 2,000 kcal per day’

As part of the implementation businesses must:
